Enabling poor rural people
to overcome poverty

Burundi: Programme transitoire de reconstruction post-conflit (PTRPC)

This programme is designed to help small farmers regenerate their livelihoods and improve household food security, and helps restore social cohesion in war-torn areas. It reclaims inland valley-bottom land for agricultural use, promotes livestock rearing and rotating schemes for newborn calves, plants nurseries and provides training. Legal support is offered to women and vulnerable groups who have suffered violence during the conflict. After the mid-term review in September 2010, it was decided to shift the programme's strategy from a post-conflict emergency focus to a longer-term development focus.

The BFFS grant supports IFAD’s work by providing complementary social and health activities; building and equipping health centres, improving access to safe drinking water, rehabilitating and building wells, providing literacy training as well as awareness raising and healthcare training about HIV/AIDS and general hygiene and sanitation. The wellbeing and economic potential of women is a particular focus of concern.
