The goal of the programme is to help create lasting improvements to food security and living conditions for rural households. In particular the programme focuses on helping smallholder farmers and fishers gain access to goods and services needed to improve productivity, strengthening farmer organizations and local institutions, and also improving access to health, education, drinking water and information.
The BFFS grant provides drinking water wells, newly-constructed schools, and helps reinforce health services within the project area, by rehabilitating community hospitals, a pharmacy depot and central health offices, and constructing and equipping local health centres. Health education focuses on an HIV/AIDS sensitization campaign, and training of trainers in health and nutrition issues.
