The Democratic Republic of the Congo is emerging from a long period of conflict and political instability. Severe poverty is widespread and a general decrease in agricultural production has led to serious difficulties in the overall food supply in the country. Farming and inland fisheries activities are hampered by lack of tools and technologies, inputs and access to markets. This IFAD-supported programme works to improve food security, incomes and living standards for the population of this north-eastern province. Specific activities focus on intensifying and diversifying agricultural and fisheries production, improving access to markets, strengthening natural resource management, and building the capacity of farmer organizations.
In a post-conflict situation in which the population struggles to access basic social services, the BFFS grant helps provide primary health care (including sensitization to HIV/AIDS), primary education, nutrition training, access to safe drinking water and better sanitation.
