Enabling poor rural people
to overcome poverty

The overall goal of the programme is to reduce poverty and vulnerability among the rural people of northern Mali by restoring the economic and social fabric that has been badly damaged by drought and civil strife. The programme works to create conditions that will support economic activity in the area, developing the long-term agropastoral potential of the area and improving access to basic services and markets. Activities target smallholder farmers, nomadic herders, rural women, young people and marginalized social groups. The programme helps build the capacity of local organizations to express their collective needs and manage investments for development.

The BFFS grant focuses on improving access to basic social services through the construction of health centres, water points for communities and their animals, family latrines, and roads and infrastructure for cattle herding, sale and slaughter. BFFS funds functional adult literacy and the training of midwives and other health staff, the distribution of mosquito nets, and training in nutrition, hygiene and family health at community level. It also raises awareness of the transmission of HIV/AIDS, malaria and other common diseases. Particular emphasis is placed on promoting women’s leadership within communities.
