The programme supports pastoral and agro-pastoral development and targets poor herder and agro-pastoralists who depend mainly on livestock for their livelihoods, helping to improve food security and increase incomes. It helps raise livestock production and improve marketing, and promotes the development of land use plans and participatory rangeland management, to help resolve frequent land and water-related conflicts in the target area. The programme also addresses the needs of large numbers of poor rural people affected by HIV/AIDS.
BFFS funding is used to construct boreholes, shallow wells, rainwater harvesting structures, and other water delivery systems that provide clean and safe water to communities. It is also used to promote improved nutrition for households, provide health facilities and community health funds, and disseminate information on nutrition and family health. The BFFS grant is also used to help create awareness of good livestock, land and environmental management and to strengthen and mainstream livestock development priorities within village land use and rangeland management plans as well as district development plans.
