Gender, HIV/AIDS and the environment. These three key themes cut across all the work of the JP, and represent major development challenges in the countries in which the JP works. Addressing these challenges is a requisite for achieving more effective, far-reaching and sustainable intersector development interventions.

Greater gender equity and the empowerment of women are central to poverty reduction, improved food security, family health and productivity.

The HIV/AIDS epidemic continues to devastate rural populations and agricultural productivity, and much work is still needed in prevention, providing adequate health care for the sick, and disseminating low-labour livelihood alternatives.

A healthy environment is the essential foundation to any successful rural development intervention. Environmental degradation and mismanagement threatens the livelihoods of the present and future generations.
