Grant amount US$35,000

Project description The strength of indigenous peoples’ communities to initiate and sustain our self-determination and self-development, is directly dependent on the capacity and strength of our traditional leadership and the ability of the community to support/direct that leadership. The project will focus on further strengthening the traditional indigenous governance system, from an indigenous peoples’ rights based perspective. Often indigenous leaders and communities are not sufficiently aware of their rights and are intimidated by others who maintain that the communities ‘have no rights’ because national legislation does not recognize these. UNDRIP awareness is crucial to effectively demand its recognition and implementation. The project foresees:

  • Strengthening of the traditional indigenous governance system.
  • Technical capacity strengthening of the communities from an indigenous rights’ perspective e.g. related to tourism, logging, biodiversity, climate change, research and intellectual property.
  • Greater awareness and application of the UNDRIP in Suriname.
