North-west Rural Development Project

The objective of the project was to increase farming families’ incomes, improve income distribution and facilitate communications and market access.

Activities had the aims of:

  • increasing the production and farm-level storage of such food crops as maize and legumes, and providing loans, technical assistance and training for women
  • increasing production of coffee, the most important cash crop in the province and the country at that time
  • promoting and strengthening cooperatives
  • restructuring and expanding extension services
  • providing institutional support to the province’s planning activities and training centres
  • improving physical infrastructure

The project has generally been considered a good example of integrated rural development.
