North-west Rural Development Project

The objective of the project was to increase farming families’ incomes, improve income distribution and facilitate communications and market access.

Activities had the aims of:

increasing the production and farm-level storage of such food crops as maize and legumes, and providing loans, technical assistance and training for women
increasing production of coffee, the most important cash crop in the province and the country at that time
promoting and strengthening cooperatives
restructuring and expanding extension services
providing institutional support to the province’s planning activities and training centres
improving physical infrastructure

The project has generally been considered a good example of integrated rural development.
