Smallholder Rehabilitation and Development Programme

The programme supported smallholder farmers cultivating cereals and groundroots in the Ashanti and Northern regions. It introduced research and extension services for growing roots and tubers, and it also supported the breeding of small ruminants.

It resulted in higher agricultural production and incomes among smallholder farm families, improved varieties and planting materials for root and tuber crops, and improved productivity of small ruminants

The programme pioneered the concept of women extension volunteers. The roots and tubers component was particularly successful, and the three improved varieties of cassava that were released provided the starting point for the subsequent root and tuber improvement programme.
