Rural Microenterprise Development Programme (RUMEDP)

The overall objective of the Rural Microenterprise Development Programme (RUMEDP) is to improve the incomes, food security and livelihoods of poor rural households, especially those with limited or no access to agricultural land. The programme will increase the incomes (on- and off-farm) of poor rural people engaged in micro businesses, particularly women and other vulnerable groups, living in the targeted local government areas (LGAs). Its specific objectives are to contribute to the creation of:

  • profitable rural microenterprises (RMEs)
  • sustained business-development support capacity and implementation in rural areas

The RUMEDP is expected to provide a model for the establishment and development of RMEs in other parts of Nigeria, particularly in states covered by the four major IFAD-supported programmes (the Roots and Tubers Expansion Programme, the Community-Based Agricultural and Rural Development Programme, the Community-Based Natural Resource Management Programme - Niger Delta, and the Rural Finance Institutions-Building Programme) and other rural-based initiatives.
