Rehabilitation Programme for Drought-Affected Areas

This programme, financed jointly with the Belgium Survival Fund, was set up in response to an extensive and prolonged period of drought in Ethiopia. It was designed to provide immediate relief in the form of seeds, tools and other essential farming needs, and to rehabilitate drinking water systems and primary health care facilities. The duration of the programme was intended to be only 2.5 years, it but was extended several times because of the complexity of implementing water supply and sanitation projects and the fact that the project areas were widely scattered.
