IFAD in Mauritius

Mauritius became a member of IFAD in 1979 and since that time the organization has supported two projects and programmes for a total loan commitment of US$23.1 million.

IFAD’s strategy in Mauritius

IFAD and the Government of Mauritius are moving towards a new form of partnership that differs from the standard model for low-income countries that was followed in Mauritius up to 2005. IFAD recognizes that the country now has sufficient national resources to address rural poverty. The focus of IFAD's interventions in Mauritius has shifted from financing projects towards developing a collaborative approach with the government in reducing the incidence of poverty in the country, that includes policy dialogue, knowledge management and sharing, and partnership building.

IFAD is helping the country introduce new pro-poor policies and reforms to protect the more disadvantaged members of society and to mitigate the effects of the economic upheavals the country is currently experiencing, as a result of losing preferential trade agreements for textiles and sugar and an increase in transport costs.

IFAD also supports the government in addressing complex policy dilemmas involving both environmental conservation and marine resource management, and issues of livelihoods, development and social welfare.

IFAD's interventions in Mauritius support:

  • sustainable management of marine resources
  • implementation of the country's non-sugar sector strategic plan
  • technical and vocational training to improve the employment prospects of poor rural people

The organization is helping Mauritius diversify and move away from its near-exclusive emphasis on sugar cane production through careful selection of products and development of market linkages to ensure that new ventures remain viable.  IFAD gives special attention to improving livelihoods and incomes for poor rural households on Rodrigues Island.
