Gikongoro Agricultural Development Project

aim of he project was to increase food production and incomes among smallholders cultivating less than 1.5 ha of land, 60 per cent of whom were women. Specific project objectives were to:

  • improve family food security and increase marketable production
  • conserve the environment
  • strengthen farmers’ organizations
  • set up a sound credit system
  • support artisanal, commercial and other activities
  • build local institutions

An evaluation in 1993 found that the project had already had a positive impact, particularly in terms of training communities and improving services provided to farmers by local institutions.
