Rural Finance Services Programme

The seven-year programme will support the effort of the government and the donor community to create an extensive, strong rural finance system. The goal is to offer rural poor communities the opportunity of higher, more stable incomes, thus alleviating poverty. Programme activities have the objectives of:

  • expanding the outreach and services of the rural finance system
  • building the capacity of rural microfinance institutions (MFIs) and clients
  • strengthening and upgrading the rural finance system
  • supporting programme administration, monitoring and evaluation

To help promote a rural business culture, the programme will support smallholders and entrepreneurs in moving from subsistence towards participation in the market economy. Participants will include the poorest sections of the rural population, with a special emphasis on women.
As the programme is essentially aimed at institutional development, participants will also include active MFIs, MFI apex organizations, and MFI capacity-building and related training institutions, as well as commercial banks and other providers of rural financial services. Any type of rural finance agency that meets eligibility criteria and serves the rural poor, including especially rural women, can benefit.
