Southwest Region Agricultural Rehabilitation Project

The project’s goal was to help increase food crop production, which was being compromised by the deteriorating physical and administrative infrastructures of the area. It had four objectives:

  • developing a research programme that was geared to the needs of small farmers and based on major food crops, soil conservation and fertility improvement
  • ensuring that agricultural tools, seeds and fertilizers reached farmers in a timely manner and at reasonable prices
  • rehabilitating roads to ensure year-round access to most of the area
  • strengthening farmers’ organizations, which had deteriorated because of internal strife, and government ministries
