Eastern Province Agricultural Development Project

In sparsely populated Eastern province only a fraction of the total land area is cultivated in any one year and most farms are small. About 60 per cent of farmers regularly produce a surplus for the market. There is a good potential for developing a much greater area of land, for either crops or grazing.

The project’s goal was to increase agricultural production over a period of five and a half years, with an emphasis on maize, cotton, sunflower seeds, groundnuts, beef and milk. The project particularly targeted farm households not yet using improved agricultural practices, and supported and strengthened agricultural services throughout the province, including:

  • agricultural research
  • agricultural extension services
  • delivery of supplies
  • agricultural credit
  • agricultural processing and storage
  • tsetse control
