Environment Conservation and Poverty-Reduction Programme in Ningxia and Shanxi
This programme works with 12 poor counties
in the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region and in Shanxi province. At least
80 per cent of the households are poor, and 10 per cent
are classified as very poor. The average annual income per capita
is US$82. Because of the region’s severe climate, most households
suffer from a seasonal food deficit. The programme works with partners
and rural poor people to increase incomes, improve access to health
and education facilities, and ensure food security during the off-season.
The programme promotes community participation in village development
plans and supports literacy and training programmes, particularly
for women.
