South Gansu Poverty-Reduction Programme

Villages in remote mountainous areas of the middle-southern part of Gansu Province are home to the poorest of the poor. People face harsh living conditions, regular droughts and a dramatic lack of water for irrigation and domestic use. They have inadequate health care and education. The arable land is low-yielding and they do not have the funds or education to use improved technology.

The programme’s objectives are to increase food security and incomes by helping to increase production and both on- and off-farm activities, and to improve rural poor people’s access to financial services and to education, health and social networks. Investments will support rural infrastructure, access to financial services and to education, and grass-roots organizations, particularly for women. Protection of common resources is also a priority.
