North-Central Province Participatory Rural Development Project

To benefit about 125,000 people in the province, the agricultural development project supported poor rural people’s efforts to rise above the poverty level and improve their food security and nutrition. IFAD loans provided funds for a wide range of activities based on and involving participation of the individuals and communities involved. Reducing malaria was one of the key aims of activities promoting health and nutrition. Another was to enable poor people to generate income through microenterprises and through improved storage and processing of crops. The project supported rural financial services, making credit available to rural poor people. It also emphasized community development and resource management, with a focus on water resources.
