Government of Mongolia awards IFAD for its assistance in rural poverty reduction

On 12 August 2006, the Government of Mongolia celebrated the 10th anniversary of cooperation with IFAD in Arhangai province – the starting point of the first IFAD loan-funded project. The government organized a conference and an exhibition where high level officials, project beneficiaries, public and private institutions, civil society and other stakeholders presented their views on the achievements and challenges in rural poverty reduction.

His Excellency Mr Terbishdagvaa D., Minister of Food and Agriculture, awarded Mr Thomas Rath, IFAD Country Programme Manager, a medal ‘best worker in the agricultural sector’ for IFAD’s contribution to the development of Mongolia’s agricultural and rural sectors. The Minister awarded Mr Erik Martens, former IFAD Country Programme Manager for Mongolia, a ‘letter of appreciation’ for his strong support to rural poverty reduction in the country.

At the same occasion, Mr Soronzonbold. D, Executive Vice President with the XacBank LLC, a partner bank of the IFAD-funded programme in Mongolia, awarded IFAD and Mr Rath with a ‘letter of appreciation’ for IFAD’s assistance to poor households in rural Mongolia.

“These awards confirm the effective partnerships for poverty reduction between Mongolia and IFAD”, states Mr Thomas Elhaut, Director of the Asia and Pacific Division.

The Government of Mongolia expressed its appreciation for IFAD’s contribution specifically to:

  • restocking activities and promotion of house yard-based vegetable production for poor, destitute families to improve nutrition and income
  • the development of community-based governance structure for natural resources
  • the development of an innovative mobile banking service with XacBank, a private bank to serve poor herders and remote villages
  • enhancing the access of poor families to social services including basic rural health, rural schools and mobile kindergarten in one of the poorest areas of Mongolia
