North-East Rural Family Enterprise Development Support Project

The project targets selected poor municipalities in the semi-arid zone of the North-East region, where rural family producers have already formed grass-roots organizations. Poor people in the area are particularly disadvantaged in terms of income, housing, sanitation and access to education and health services. The project area will eventually be enlarged to include other areas of the North-East where similar conditions exist.

The overall objective of the project is to reduce poverty levels and social inequality within the region. The project particularly targets rural poor people who have small farms and other rural enterprises, and those interested in developing small businesses. Many people in this area have benefited from agrarian reform but need technical assistance and credit. The project has a particular focus on women and young people.

Rural microenterprises have a high development potential in the semi-arid North-East. This project is designed to ensure that rural poor people can improve their business and organizational capacities and increase their income through sustainable agro-industries and other rural enterprises. Specific project objectives include:

  • strengthening organizations of rural family entrepreneurs
  • identifying and promoting new business opportunities
  • establishing a rural financial service system
  • ensuring access to technical support services, markets and credit
  • ensuring that women have equal access to project resources carrying out preparation for replication in the rest of the project area of schemes that have been successful in the initial municipalities.
