IFAD in Nicaragua

IFAD has financed seven projects in Nicaragua since 1980, for a total of US$83.2 million. Four projects are closed. One has been ongoing since 2001 in the Departments of León, Chinandega and Managua. Another project is undertaking activities in the dry region of the country, where most poor people live. And the last one was approved on September 2007.

IFAD strategy in Nicaragua

IFAD has collaborated with the Government of Nicaragua since 1980, funding projects that support and promote rural poor people's access to assets and opportunities in order to build their capacities as individuals and as groups. The projects focus on enhancing employment opportunities for wage labourers, small farmers and livestock herders, and people engaged in other rural activities, including small-scale non-agricultural enterprises. In all IFAD-funded operations in the country special emphasis is placed on helping vulnerable groups such as women and young people.

Together with other donors, IFAD supports and co-finances the implementation of the Nicaraguan government’s Productive Rural Development Programme. It ensures that national rural development policies incorporate lessons learned from IFAD’s experience and knowledge of improving livelihood opportunities for rural poor people and reducing gender inequalities within the country.

IFAD continues to focus development efforts on marginal and vulnerable regions where rural poor people still risk being excluded because of low investment in human capital and infrastructure. It finances strategic investments in three broad areas:

  • improving access to markets, technology and financial resources for rural poor people, and developing non-agricultural rural activities such as tourism
  • improving the capacity and efficiency of local rural development institutions
  • helping develop innovative strategies that, together with knowledge gained from experience and with best practices, can be incorporated in national and regional rural development policies
