Regional Programme in Support of a Medicinal Plants Development Network in Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay

There is a large and dynamic market worldwide for herbal medicines and good potential to develop this sector as a means to improving the incomes and welfare of small-scale farmers. This regional programme is designed to help small-scale farmers develop the production and processing of medicinal plants into herbal medicines. The primary objective of the programme is to support the establishment of a regional network for research, offering training in the cultivation and processing of medicinal plants to small farmers. Programme features include:

  • increasing regional knowledge and awareness of medicinal plants and herbal medicine
  • promoting the organization of small farmers in research and development projects in this sector
  • supporting agricultural research relating to medicinal plants that benefit small farmers, establishing a regional medicinal plants research and technology network to promote the integration of small farmers into production chains.
