Regional
Programme in Support of a Medicinal Plants Development Network in Argentina,
Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay
There
is a large and dynamic market worldwide for herbal medicines and good
potential to develop this sector as a means to improving the incomes
and welfare of small-scale farmers. This regional programme is designed
to help small-scale farmers develop the production and processing
of medicinal plants into herbal medicines. The primary objective of
the programme is to support the establishment of a regional network
for research, offering training in the cultivation and processing
of medicinal plants to small farmers. Programme features include:
- increasing
regional knowledge and awareness of medicinal plants and herbal
medicine
- promoting
the organization of small farmers in research and development projects
in this sector
- supporting
agricultural research relating to medicinal plants that benefit
small farmers, establishing
a regional medicinal plants research and technology network to promote
the integration of small farmers into production chains.
