Tihama
Environment Protection Project
This IFAD-initiated project supported the
expansion of the Tihama Development Authority’s (TDA) work to protect
the environment and provide assistance to enable poor farmers to develop
sustainable farming in the Red Sea coastal plain. Activities included:
- conserving the land
by controlling the encroachment of sand dunes onto productive lands
and planning dune stabilization
- conserving water,
particularly by encouraging farmers to increase productivity by
increasing efficient water use
- supporting rural women
by introducing training in literacy, health and nutrition, and by
providing extension and veterinary services, as well as credit to
enable women to increase the productivity of their livestock
- strengthening TDA’s
management capability
