Research on nutritional effects of technological and policy changes in agriculture

The objective of this research project was to improve the design of food policies and agricultural interventions that work to meet the nutritional needs of rural poor people. In particular it increased understanding of the linkages between public policies and agricultural projects for improved nutrition and food consumption. It focused on rural poor people and how they are affected by technological change and how future technology should be designed to meet their needs.

The project had two main objectives. The first was to develop, adapt and test analytic approaches for assessing the effects of projects and policies related to technological change on energy-protein deficiencies and household food consumption. The second was to provide empirical evidence relating to the impact of projects and policies on these deficiencies, developing indicators of the change in quality of diet. In India , Nigeria and Zambia case studies testing analytical approaches were carried out regarding:

  • introduction of modern rice varieties in Tamil Nadu, India
  • a technical assistance/marketing scheme for milk in two regions of India
  • a multi-crop production system among small farmers in northern Nigeria
  • pricing policies for maize in Zambia
