The International Year of Microcredit 2005
Microfinance is a valuable tool for fighting poverty – especially in the developing world's rural areas, where more than 900 million extremely poor people live. By putting credit, savings, insurance and other basic financial services within their reach, microfinance can present millions of poor people with opportunities to overcome poverty themselves.
The International Year of Microcredit is dedicated to raising awareness about the important role microfinance can play in eradicating poverty and achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).
The Year will also serve as a platform for governments, UN agencies and microfinance partners to work together to bring sustainable financial services to poor people.
