Duties: Under the general supervision of the Editor/Reviser (English Section), the incumbent provides English editorial and translation assistance as described below in pursuit of the goal of the Office of the Secretary to promote smooth relations with the Fund’s Member States by ensuring quality documentation and other linguistic advisory services. In particular, the incumbent will perform the following duties:
Competencies: Education: Secondary school education and formal certificates in language, translation or in an IFAD field (agriculture, finance, economics, etc.) Experience: Minimum five years of experience in a translation/editing unit at an international organization, including previous translation and editorial assistant experience in the international finance and development area, preferably within the United Nations system; knowledge of a broad range of subjects dealt with by IFAD (political, social, legal, economic, financial, administrative, scientific and technical). Languages: Perfect command of English and excellent knowledge of Spanish and French (at least FAO level C). Knowledge of additional official and non-official languages desirable. Knowledge: The incumbent must have excellent analytical and English writing skills; high standards of accuracy, consistency and faithfulness to the spirit, style and nuances of the original text; good grasp of subject matter; mastery of terminological and reference research techniques; ability to use all sources of reference and information and to do research; ability to maintain adequate speed and volume of output, taking into account the difficulty of the text and the specified deadline; highest level of initiative, political sensitivity, versatility, judgement and discretion. Advanced computer literacy. Familiarity with the Fund’s administrative procedures and general operations Skills: Strong interpersonal and communication skills. Ability to work as a team member, with sensitivity and respect for diversity. Ability to establish priorities and to plan, coordinate and monitor own work and work of others. Ability to keep abreast of technology developments applicable to editing and translation. Planning and organization (performance management) Profile: Commitment to pursuing in-service training, external study or independent study to acquire the ability to perform at higher levels of difficulty and complexity. Ability to work quickly and accurately under pressure. 1/ Subediting covers the full range of tasks involved in final preparation of a text for release to IFAD’s governing bodies and Member States, including but not limited to the cross-checking of factual content and internal coherency and the verification of observance of official IFAD document production standards.
