Media roundtable discussion: The unlocking of Africa’s agricultural potential
Date: Monday, December 10, 2012
Time: 11:45 a.m. – 12.30 p.m.
Venue: Le Méridien Piccadilly Hotel, London
Agricultural growth is proving to be Africa’s pathway out of hunger, malnutrition and poverty. This year, global leaders have further recognized agricultural development as a main driver of economic growth and food security in Africa. Cross-sector initiatives like the New Alliance for Food Security and Nutrition and the UK’s Hunger Summit in August show that there is political will to scale success and effect real change on the ground.
2013 is a critical year for Africa’s farmers and global food security. The UK’s G8 will spotlight agriculture as a solution to hunger and malnutrition. The 10th anniversary of the Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Programme (CAADP) will celebrate the increased public investment in agriculture by African governments.
Next year also presents an opportunity for a continued global push for increased smart investments in agriculture, both by governments and the private sector. Farming is a business and the private sector must fuel the development of Africa’s agribusiness in upgrading smallholder agriculture to meet demand from foreign and emerging markets in developing countries.
Join us on 10th December for an engaging discussion with the Presidents of IFAD and AGRA - leading organisations on agriculture development on how Africa’s farming potential is being unlocked to meet the world’s current and future food demands’.

About The International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD)
The International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) works with poor rural people to enable them to grow and sell more food, increase their incomes and determine the direction of their own lives. Since 1978, IFAD has invested about US$14.3 billion in grants and low-interest loans to developing countries through projects empowering over 400 million people to break out of poverty, thereby helping to create vibrant rural communities. IFAD is an international financial institution and a specialized UN agency based in Rome – the United Nations’ food and agriculture hub. It is a unique partnership of 168 members from the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), other developing countries and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).
