Opening remarks by the Director of the Near East and North Africa Division
Several major events related to food security took place in 2009, all with potentially significant impacts on our region: the Arab Economic, Development and Social Summit in Kuwait in January; the Group of Eight summit in L'Aquila, Italy, in July; and the World Summit on Food Security in Rome in November. These events underscored the urgent need for much greater investments in agriculture. The Kuwait Summit approved an ambitious US$26 billion Arab food security programme; L'Aquila committed US$20 billion to address the food crisis.
