The workshop, entitled “Civil Society in Rural Development and Poverty Alleviation in Eastern and Southern Africa” was organized by the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), with co- financing from the Government of Italy. It was held in Nairobi, Kenya from 6-9 May 2002. The overall objective was to share and explore approaches to rural development in the region, and to derive policy and operational directions for enabling the rural poor to have improved access to and control over financial services, markets, productive resources (particularly land and water) and information and technology systems.
