Participatory Control of Desertification and Poverty Reduction in the Arid and Semi-Arid High Plateau Ecosystems of Eastern Morocco
Context: The arid and semi-arid high plateau areas of Morocco are fragile environments with weakly structured soils, sporadic and unreliable precipitation, and low productivity. Land degradation is prevalent in the region. Deterioration of rangeland resources and the consequent increase in rural poverty are exacerbated by prolonged and sometimes severe periods of drought.
Global benefits: Conservation of natural ecosystem integrity in the arid and semi-arid high plateaux of Morocco. Increased carbon sequestration and improved rangeland biodiversity.
Strategy: Combat desertification and mitigate the impacts of land degradation by enhancing protection of pastoral resources and improving the livelihoods of rural poor people in the region.
IFAD-GEF synergies: The intervention is based on a single integrated approach to ensure maximum impact and resource efficiency. A livestock and pasture development component, funded through an IFAD loan, focuses primarily on livestock production and sustainable management of rangeland resources.
The GEF component aims to control land degradation and preserve the functions and services of the alfa grass ecosystem.
