Technology Needs to Work for the Rural Poor

To use the land productively, technology is important.

1. We need to bring existing technologies to the poor, in part through the reduction of gender bias in extension services.
2. Then we have to make sure that agricultural research is reoriented towards the crops of the poor, especially women; and
3. finally, new technologies need to be tailored to the needs of smallholder agriculture and to increase the food for the poor.

The rural poor can benefit most if they are empowered to decide which technologies to use and how to use them.
