PRESIDENT’S FOREWORD

In 2008 there was an intensification of the world food security crisis, with food price volatility on international markets putting pressure on global food security. The year also saw the emergence of a global economic recession. The renewed interest in agriculture as an agent for lasting development was underscored by the United Nations Secretary-General’s decision to form a Task Force on the Global Food Security Crisis, and the subsequent development of the Comprehensive Framework for Action, in which IFAD played an active role. IFAD’s new President, Kanayo F. Nwanze, reflects on the events of the past year and the many challenges of the present.

RESOURCE MOBILIZATION IN 2008

IFAD is financed through periodic replenishments. Every three years, Member States take part in negotiations to determine the organization’s policy direction, consult with management and replenish IFAD’s resources. This chapter gives:

PARTNERSHIPS

Working in partnership is key to the effectiveness of IFAD’s activities. This chapter highlights the year’s achievements of three partners based at IFAD’s headquarters in Rome:

The chapter covers IFAD’s cooperation with the Rome-based agencies of the United Nations, and partnerships that aim to promote innovation and research, inclusive financial systems, accessible financial services and more.
