Periodicals IFAD Update This twice-yearly bulletin provides a forum for dialogue on issues of policy and practice relating to poverty and development. The purpose of IFAD Update is to demonstrate that the organization has not only accumulated considerable knowledge on key issues in rural poverty and development, but is also at the forefront of current event and changes in the international environment. Comments on major issues related to poverty alleviation in the development aid debate, and shows how IFAD, as a practitioner, carries policy development into practice. Language: English, French, Spanish and Arabic Published: 1997 IFAD Update No.2 Responds to the question "Why IFAD?", showing how the Fund confront poverty issues by offering solutions and creating models that can be replicated to combat different type of poverty in its own way and time. The main article "Markets and Private Investment: The Strategic Challenge in Sub-Saharan Africa" discusses whether globalization can be made to work for the benefit of the rural poor. IFAD Update No.3 Celebrates IFADs twentieth anniversary, presenting past achievements and discussing upcoming changes. The main article presents how IFAD is responding to the Convention to Combat Desertification and discusses IFADs role in housing the Global Mechanism of the Convention. Other articles include: "IFAD Positioning for the Future", a personal view on the future of the organization by a former member of the Executive Board; "IFADs Contribution to the Development of the Rural Poor" and "Food Security Through Soil and Water Conservation Learning from Farmers in Lesotho". Language: English Published: 1998 IFAD Update No.4 The editorial presents IFADs position regarding post-crisis situations, which is to help its target group jump-start the resumption of the development process and enhance its resilience and coping strategies for future crisis. The main article, "The Indigenous Peoples Drama", gives some examples of how indigenous people accept to move from tradition to innovation as long as their own cultural patterns, social institutions and legal systems are respected. Other articles include: "Eastern Europe and the Former Soviet Union: Lessons Learned in Projects" and "Linking Social and Economic Development Strategies". The editorial by Bruce Moore, Coordinator of the Popular Coalition to Eradicate Hunger and Poverty, presents the actions that this global consortium for the rural poor is implementing to disseminate and cross fertilize civil-society initiatives in the areas of land reform; emergency prevention and rehabilitation; and public awareness on poverty issues. The main article, "Strategic Partnerships" features the alliances that have emerged from the international workshop on Innovations in Microfinance for the Rural Poor, held in Ghana in November 1998.
