Sierra Leone: Fighting fires with rice paddies

This GIS study shows that the development of rice paddies in Sierra Leone has led to fewer forest fires.

Farmer groups who developed rice paddies under the IFAD-supported Smallholder Commercialization Programme have shifted from slash-and-burn cultivation to rice cultivation in inland swamps because the latter produces higher yields. This shift is visible in remote sensing imagery.
