An interactive discussion will be held at IFAD Headquarters in Rome with representatives from the International Poverty Reduction Center in China (IPRCC) and the Ministry of Agriculture and Natural Resources in Ethiopia to learn about their successfull experiences in rapidly reducing rural poverty.

Both Countries experienced fast rural and structural transformations – characterized by shifts from a prevailing rural- and agriculture-based to an industry- and service-based economy and an increased urbanization – which resulted in a drastic reduction of rural poverty.

Our discussion will focus on how China and Ethiopia accomplished such remarkable progress, what the contributing factors were, and which challenges remain. We will also discuss if there are common pathways in their success stories, and what lessons can be drawn for other countries.
