Mobilizing knowledge, technologies and resources from the South and for the South to provide tailored solutions to rural communities has been globally recognized as an effective modality for achieving SDGs. To accelerate rural poverty alleviation, enhance rural productivity, and advance rural transformation through South-South and Triangular Cooperation, the China-IFAD SSTC Facility was established in 2018, becoming the first Facility in IFAD dedicated to SSTC.

The Facility takes advantage of the successful experience and expertise of China on rural development and poverty elimination, and promotes exchanges and cooperation among developing countries. The prominent features of Facility funded projects include prioritizing country ownership and leadership, enhancing local capacity and development, facilitating peer learning and exchange, and promoting innovation and sustainability to deliver assistance and facilitate partnership for achieving better results on the ground.

The Facility is funding 13 projects with a volume of US$5.8 million, reaching “the last mile” to rural poor in more than 40 countries from Africa, Asia and Latin America. The projects deploy South-South cooperation as an important instrument to promote rural transformation and enhance food security, over a broad range of thematic areas, such as value chain enhancement, aquaculture productivity improvement, climate-smart business model, rural employment for youth, nutrition improvement, rural investment promotion, and more. Substantial benefit has been delivered to smallholder farmers with increased productivity, enhanced livelihood and improved nutrition.

The Facility is not only addressing the recurring challenges of rural development but it has also been adapting to emerging needs such as COVID-19 recovery, to mitigate the impact from the pandemic and build resilience for rural community.
