Second Village Livestock and Rural Development Project

Second Village Livestock and Rural Development Project

Although the target area of the Second Village Livestock and Rural Development Project was underdeveloped and isolated, it was one of Madagascar’s main livestock raising and fattening regions. However, local producers faced many problems, such as poor livestock health, mediocre fodder quality during the dry season and inadequate drinking water for livestock.

The project therefore had the following aims:

  • To increase meat production, with a view to increasing poor farmers’ income and boosting exports
  • To strengthen institutions in the livestock sector
  • To promote policy changes for this sector
  • To rehabilitate rural infrastructure

The effects of the project were also to be felt at the national level, thanks to the importation of veterinary products and essential equipment.

Despite some initial difficulties (cash-flow problems, inadequate supplies of vaccines, financial difficulties of the Ministry of Public Works and delays in the purchase of veterinary products), the project achieved satisfactory results, especially in the sphere of training.
