Suriname has a mixed economy that relies on its mineral resources, including bauxite, gold and oil. Economic growth is changeable due to global commodity price fluctuations.  

Around one in four live in poverty. Despite efforts to reduce poverty, challenges in education, healthcare and infrastructure persist.
