Strengthening mobility and building a restorative circular African economy to protect environmental resources

Lack of economic opportunity is a root cause of irregular migration. Those who leave are often young people in search of better economic opportunities elsewhere, contributing to brain drain. Climate change is also a major factor that makes people leave their homes.

The Initiative for Sustainability, Stability and Security in Africa (3S Initiative) tackles the interlinked issues of climate resilience, youth unemployment and migration. By strengthening natural, human and institutional resources, the initiative enhances sustainability, stability and security.

In partnership with the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification, IFAD is developing a programme to maximize the impact of migrant remittances and diaspora investments to enhance rural climate resilience and promote sustainable land use in Africa. It also generates livelihoods to reduce the incentives to migrate, particularly in the Sahel region.
