The context

Chile is a high-income country with a GDP per capita of US$15,355. The current high price of copper, for which Chile is a lead exporter, may generate a sustained increase in Chile’s budget and fiscal space.

Chile is the leading country in Latin America and the Caribbean for issuing thematic bonds, including sustainability-linked bonds which are a novel instrument to finance programmes and policies to achieve social goals.

Country facts

  • Chile has one of the lowest incidences of food insecurity in South America, yet around 3.5 per cent of Chileans cannot afford a healthy diet.

  • Chile has one of the highest levels of income inequality in the Latin America and Caribbean region.

  • Chile is home to various indigenous communities, such as the Mapuche people, who have faced historical and ongoing land disputes and socioeconomic inequalities.
