Indigenous peoples have a special role to play in the conservation and sustainable management of natural resources. The United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues is a high-level advisory body to the Economic and Social Council. The Forum deals with indigenous issues related to economic and social development, culture, the environment, education, health, and human rights.
This year’s Forum focuses on “Indigenous peoples, business, autonomy and the human rights principles of due diligence including free, prior and informed consent”. IFAD is hosting the following side events:

The Indigenous Peoples Assistance Facility (IPAF) provides financial support for grassroots development projects. This side event will bring together stakeholders to share IPAF’s approach and experiences, position IFAD as a leader in mobilizing climate financing for and with Indigenous Peoples, and announce the call for proposals for the next IPAF cycle which focuses on climate change, resilience, and biodiversity. A loss of food biodiversity and increased consumption of processed foods have caused disruptions in Indigenous Peoples’ food systems, leading to malnutrition. This event will launch a toolbox with guidelines for designing projects with Indigenous Peoples to improve their diets and nutrition, while leveraging local food biodiversity.
