Indigenous Peoples’ agency to contribute to UNFSS Action Track 3 and Action Track 4 game-changing initiatives

This side event at the United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues (UNPFII), supported by IFAD, FAO and WFP, will bring stakeholders together to

  • share examples of how Indigenous Peoples’ agency is supported, and how it contributes to sustainable food systems
  • highlight Indigenous Peoples’ game-changing solutions, identified within the UN Food Systems Summit Action Tracks 3 and 4, to boost nature-positive production and equitable livelihoods at scale
  • explore how the Summit outcomes can catalyse action on the ground and foster coalition-building to support Indigenous Peoples and their knowledge systems.

The United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues (UNPFII) is a high-level advisory body to the Economic and Social Council. The Forum deals with indigenous issues related to economic and social development, culture, the environment, education, health, and human rights.

The Permanent Forum:

  • provides expert advice and recommendations on indigenous issues to the Council, as well as to programmes, funds and agencies of the United Nations
  • raises awareness of and promotes the integration and coordination of activities related to indigenous issues within the UN system
  • prepares and disseminates information on indigenous issues
  • promotes respect for and full application of the provisions of the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples and follows up on the effectiveness of this Declaration.

The theme of this year’s Forum is Peace, justice and strong institutions: the role of Indigenous Peoples in implementing Sustainable Development Goal 16.
