Ireland and IFAD share a commitment to empower rural people to overcome poverty and hunger. Both share a focus on food and nutrition security and developing sustainable food systems. Moreover, they are committed to addressing climate change, protecting the environment and prioritising vulnerable groups.

IFAD strongly supports Ireland’s commitment to “reach the furthest behind first” and aims to deliver on this by generating better and more resilient livelihoods for all poor rural people.

A founding member of IFAD, Ireland is an alternate member of our Executive Board. IFAD works with a number of Irish partners. For example, the Irish League of Credit Union Foundation supports IFAD-financed projects and is currently implementing an Irish Aid-IFAD project to economically empower women in Ethiopia, Tanzania and Rwanda. IFAD has been a regular participant in the Irish Forum for International Agricultural Development since its launch. IFAD and Sustainable Food Systems Ireland established a partnership in 2021. IFAD also partners with Irish universities, both through joint research activities and by offering internships to students.
