Japan is a strong advocate of “human security”, a principle that is applied through a commitment to support the most vulnerable people while addressing broadly all dimensions of existence, livelihood and dignity.

Japan’s vision is shared by IFAD, whose mandate is empowering economically and socially the poorest rural people in remote areas of developing countries. IFAD’s strategic focus is closely aligned with Japan’s official development assistance priorities, including promoting food security and nutrition. Japan is a globally recognized leader on nutrition and will host the Tokyo Nutrition for Growth Summit. Nutrition is firmly embedded in IFAD’s corporate strategies and commitments and an Action Plan is in place.

IFAD is the only specialized global development organization exclusively dedicated to transforming agriculture, rural economies and food systems to make them more inclusive, productive, resilient and sustainable.

Japan is a key partner of IFAD, providing strategic guidance to the Fund. Japan has contributed a total of over US$562 million to IFAD’s replenishments, plus supplementary resources for a total amount of US$10.5 million.
