Artisanal Fisheries Development Project

Artisanal fishers have the lowest per capita income in Grenada. They operate in small vessels and use traditional gear. It is difficult for them to obtain credit to purchase the fishing boats, equipment and materials that they need to improve their productivity, because they have no collateral. And because of poor marketing and processing facilities, they cannot obtain the best prices for their catch.

The project’s aim was to make broader use of underused fishery resources through a range of activities that would increase the productivity and incomes of people engaged in fishing, marketing fish and building boats.

Project activities included:

  • developing and improving fishing centres for easy access to essential supplies, services and markets
  • providing fishing materials such as engines, spare parts, twine, lines and hooks
  • providing funds for a line of credit to fishers for the purchase of fishing gear and equipment
  • providing technical assistance to support supervisors of fishery, marketing and training operations
  • promoting the formation of fishing cooperatives

The project reached 2,000 fishers’ families. The fishing centres are still in operation.
