Artisanal Fisheries Development Project in the Aby Lagoon
Côte d'Ivoire
Fisheries

The aim of the project was to help local fishermen overcome a critical level of overfishing in the Aby Lagoon. It introduced new techniques for managing the lagoon’s fish resources. The project supported the fishers, building their capabilities and encouraging them to participate in activities that led to improved navigation conditions, better marketing and increased access to public health facilities.
Activities were interrupted after a period of social conflict in 1990, when the project infrastructures were destroyed. But the intervention was resumed in 1992 and the project was completed in 1992.
