Income Diversification Programme in the Mali Sud Area
The programme helped producers reduce cotton production and diversify their crops. It also had the aim of mitigating the effects of the withdrawal of the Mali Company for Textile Development, which provided distribution and credit services in the region.
More specifically, the programme worked to:
- lay the basis for sustainable and self-managed community development by encouraging the creation of village farming organizations
- increase production of traditional crops and diversify agriculture to reduce the importance of the cotton network
- help establish mutual savings and credit institutions to encourage rural savings
- improve living conditions by improving access to villages in the area and by developing basic social services
