The primary goal of the project is to improve the livelihoods of vulnerable groups sustainably through improved management of their resource base, so as to contribute to preservation and restoration of the environment. The overall objective is to help the poorest rural people in several hill districts in the region improve their livelihoods through environmentally sound management of their resource base. The project has the following components:
- strengthening the capacity of local communities and participating agencies;
- livelihood development activities;
- natural resource management and biodiversity conservation;
- social-sector development activities;
- infrastructure development; and
- project management.
Following a request from the Government, on December 2009 the IFAD Executive Board approved a supplementary loan of USD 20 million for the cofinancing of the NERCOMP II project. This project will be implemented over a 6 year period and will be completed in 2015
