Rural Financial Services Project

Efforts to improve rural competitiveness and productivity are at the forefront of the government's poverty reduction strategy. Through access to credit, savings and other financial services, small-scale farmers can increase their yields and their incomes. Microenterprises and other off-farm activities also generate income, especially for women. The goal of this project is to help the Government of Ghana broaden rural financial services and build the capacity of the financial sector to enable the rural poor to improve their incomes.
Objectives include:

    • improving access of rural people, particularly women, to financial services
    • building local and regional capacities in finance by strengthening rural banks, building an apex bank and reinforcing other microfinance institutions
    • encouraging reforms in policies and regulations to enhance the rural financial system
